What does Hallelujah really mean?

August 31, 2025

Did you know that the word Hallelujah is a Hebrew word?

Jesus says in John 4:22 – KJV.

“Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.”

AI summarized the meaning here fairly well I think –

“This verse, spoken by Jesus to a Samaritan woman, highlights that salvation originates from the Jewish people.”

If nobody has ever shown you this it may be a shock, but Jesus is a Jew. He told us this right there in John 4:22. Matthew gives the genealogy of Jesus starting in Matthew 1:1 – everyone in that generational line is a Jew beginning with Abraham; the first Jew and the father of our faith.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 24:7 that “nation’s” (ethnos) and kingdoms (Basileia) will rise up against each other and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places but do not be alarmed because these are necessary and this is not the sign of the end. English bibles translate the Greek word “ethnos” into Nation, but it also means “people” and “Gentile” and “pagan”. A Gentile is a “non-Jew”. A pagan is a non-believer. A believer is part of the body of Christ – that’s the church! The word church in Greek is /ekklesia/ and it means “called out of this world and to God”. Don’t be of the world – be in the kingdom of priests that Jesus calls his own in Revelation 1:6

I wrote all that as a set up to this: In God’s view, there are 3 categories of people on planet earth: Jews, believers (in Jesus), and non-believers. Jews can be both a believer and a non-believer. Guess who’s fighting with the Jews? All the world’s non-believers are. If you’re against the Jews, you’re on the wrong side of the argument. If you don’t like that, take it up with God. Ask to have God open the eyes of your understanding (read Ephesians 1:15-23). And this is what happens to all of the non-believers; they end up in the lake of fire – Rev 21:8. Salvation is of the Jews.

That was the intro – I hope you’re warmed up too. Let’s get rolling!

John 1:1 – In [the] beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word

Logos (Λόγος) is Greek for Word. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us – John 1:14.

Here are 8 foundation scriptures for better understanding: Hit pause and read them now.

Ephesians 1:15-23 (ask to have the eyes of your understanding opened).

Ephesians 3:14-19 (knowing the love of Christ passes knowledge to you – ask for this).

John 14:23 (Jesus will manifest himself to all those that love him and he and the Father will abide with them) – see Ephesians 3:14-19 above.

John 14:26 (the Father will send the Comforter [the Holy Ghost] to teach believers all things).

2 Peter 1:20-21 (Every word in the bible is written by the Holy Spirit, thus God)

2 Timothy 3:16 (All scripture is God-breathed).

Proverbs 25:2 (By design, the bible is a puzzle).

Isaiah 28:10-13 (God instructed man to put the bible together exactly how it is; chapter & verse)

Ask that God would open the eyes of your understanding. In Hebrew, the word for understanding is Binah. It means the God-given capacity to grasp the implications of God’s revelation & truth.

This is Binah written in Hebrew (reads right to left). בינה

Proverbs 4:7 reveals to us that wisdom is the principal thing, so get wisdom: and with all your getting get binah (understanding).

OK, here’s some understanding. Have you ever said or heard someone say: “the bible says…”? Interesting, isn’t it? The Word of God speaks which means it is alive. Jesus is the Word. Jesus is alive. “I am he that lived, and was dead, and behold, is alive for evermore, Amen. That’s from Revelation 1:18. Jesus is alive. People that are alive speak…the Word of God (The Bible) will speak to you, but you must read it and spend time with it. “Give us this day our daily bread” Matthew 6:11. Jesus (The Word) is the bread of life – John 6:35. Jesus was born in Bethlehem. In Hebrew, Bethlehem is two words: Bet (house), Lechem (bread). Bethlehem is literally translated as: “house of bread”. Do yourself a favor and read the rest of this out loud so you hear the words as you read them:

Father, give me the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of you; and open the eyes of my understanding so that I can see the hope of your calling and what the riches of your inheritance is and what is the exceeding greatness of your power towards us, the believers, according to the works of your mighty power. Which you worked in Jesus the Messiah when you raised him from the dead and set him at your right hand in the heavenly realms above every principality and authority and power and dominion, and every name being named, in this age and the one to come.  (Ephesians 1:17-21)

The bible is a puzzle and it’s by design. Isaiah 28:10 shows us this:

“Precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little”

The word “precept” in Hebrew is / Tsav / and it means “command or order” (military folks know what an order or a command is).  The word “line” in Hebrew is / Kav / and it means “line, a measuring line, and cord”.  So, this explains why the bible is laid out in chapter and verse. God gave his instructions to do it this way (for us). The verses of the bible fit together like puzzle pieces; they stand all alone for binah and they help explain a bigger picture when we put them together; like learning that Jesus is a Jew and to understand what and how and why you worship, you’ll understand better with a Jewish perspective. The bible is also structured easily; like books in a library catalog system; we can find the piece of the puzzle we’re looking for.

Here’s some binah for those of you still fighting this fact about “salvation is of the Jews”. I am blessed with 4 children. Do I love my 4th child less than my 1st one?  NO! But I have loved my 1st child longer. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” – that’s Romans 1:16 – KJV.

I wrote early above that Proverbs 25:2 is a foundation scripture in this letter. It’s a foundation scripture to understanding God’s word period! Proverbs 25:2 is a key to binah. The next 2 bible verses are incredibly important to understand and know. They are: 2 Peter 1:20-21 & 2 Timothy 3:16. The bible was written by The Holy Spirit. Get that understanding! Let God remodel your thoughts.

Proverbs 25:2 – KJV

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honor of kings is to search out a matter

That verse is only 6 different Hebrew words.  Glory and honor are the same Hebrew word /kaw-BODE/. It means: glory, honor, splendor, wealth. Thing and matter are the same Hebrew word /dabar/. It means: word, matter, thing, speech, command, promise.

Remember the word Logos from John 1:1? What if we understand Proverbs 25:2 this way?

It is the glory of God to conceal the Logos: but the glory of kings is to search out the Logos.

Wow! By the glory of God, Jesus is concealed inside of his dabar (word). And God has revealed his word inside of Jesus (the Logos). Our glory (members of God’s church – those called out of the world and to him) is to search out the Word (Jesus) – (Ephesians 5:25-26). Get your daily bread (Jesus). ALSO…if you get dirty you take a shower or bath, right? Well, if you trip (trespass or sin) ask for forgiveness and the Logos will wash you off like water from a shower.  Cool huh?

Next, to help us get more binah (understanding) from this passage – let’s find out who the kings are in Proverbs 25:2.

WE ARE! Here is 1 Peter 2:9 – KJV

“You however are a race chosen, a royal priesthood, a nation holy, a people for his (Christ’s) possession”.

Very cool, we are a royal priesthood.  Revelation 1:6 says that we are a “kingdom of priests”.

To finish this letter, I’ll show the hidden Logos that’s all the way at the top of this letter – it’s the first word at the top of the screen.

Hallelu-yah is a Hebrew word. Here is hallelujah in Hebrew –

(Hebrew reads right to left) הללו יה

Hebrew reads the opposite direction as English. In Hebrew, Hallelu-yah is 2 words. The-4 letter word is pronounced /Hallel-oo/. It means “Praise-to”. The shorter word is pronounced / Ya /. Guys, say hello to our creator – I AM from Exodus 3:14 “Ya” is God! In Hebrew, Hallel-oo-yah reads “Praise to God!”. Read Psalm 150. God the Father concealed himself right there in the word Hallel-oo-yah! Proverbs 25:2 on display.

One last point of importance – We’re told from God’s word that a truth shall be established by 2 or 3 witnesses.  The Holy Spirit will confirm the word in your heart for a witness. In heaven there are 3 witnesses – The Father, the Logos (Word), and the Holy Spirit – 1 John 5:7. There are 3 places (witnesses) in the bible where we are told this reality of a 2nd or 3rd witness:

Deuteronomy 19:15 –

One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter (dabar or word) be established.

Matthew 18:16 –

But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established (‘rhema’ is used for word)

2 Corinthians 13:1 –

This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established. (‘rhema’ is used for word).

Interesting that this instruction of establishing a truth or word or matter is given 3 times & the third time in sequential biblical order that it appears it says: “This is the third time I am coming to you.”

The Holy Spirit will confirm a matter to you with a 2nd or 3rd witness of a revelation. It happens to me all the time – it happened as I wrote this letter when I was led to Exodus 3:14.

Read Psalm 150 & Isaiah 28:10 again and you’ll see the two witnesses or I call it the double stamp.

I know this is a lot of take in. If you read at my speed, this took you about 10 minutes up to this point. It took me way longer than 10 minutes to write. I want to bring your attention to this so you’ll understand that the verses of the bible happen over time, not at the speed of your reading.

In Luke 24, we read about the tomb being empty on the third day. Then in verse 13 we start reading about 2 disciples walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus. The distance between the two cities is sixty furlongs; that’s seven and a half miles.  How fast do you walk?  It takes me about twenty minutes to walk one mile.  So, their walk was at least 2 and a half hours…they were talking…verse 14 “And they talked together of all these things which had happened” (events up to the crucifixion). Then in verse 27 we read…”and beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he (Jesus) expounded unto them (the 2 guys walking to Emmaus) in all the scriptures the things concerning himself (Jesus)”.  WOW! One guy said of that verse that he would love to have “all the scriptures” Jesus covered on that walk to Emmaus. The point here is that Luke 24 starts “very” early in the morning (Luke 24:1) and concludes much later in the day as we read in Luke 24:29 “the day was far spent”.

Read and reflect on the meanings of the words. Each word has value. Each letter is exact. Jesus is alive. Let the Word come alive in you! Read this letter several times. Look up all the scripture verses. I know it takes time. I know you have things to accomplish and work to do. If you’ll allow him, he’ll help you get it all done. Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:33 – “seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all the things you need shall be added to you.” This letter began with one word up at the top of page one.  Now you know what it means each time you say it.

Hallelujah (Praise to God)

Shalom (Peace)

Philip (Phil)
